Christoph Both holds a Masters of Music (Artist's Diploma Violoncello) from the Musikhochschule Frankfurt as well as a Masters in Education in Music and Physics. A recipient of an international DAAD doctoral scholarship from Germany awarded him a Ph.D. in Musicology in the field of information theory and electronic music composition from the University of Victoria, British Columbia, Canada. As a cellist, he has toured Germany, Poland, Latvia, France, Switzerland, UK, and Japan. Specializing in contemporary music performance and improvisation his work has been extensively supported by Canada Council, NS Arts travel/recording grants. Artistic director and conductor of the CHEBUCTO SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA. CD releases with his ensemble SANCTUARY; Haenssler Classic, Germany, Warner Records, UK, Songline Records Canada. His works are published by Metisse Music, Paris, France. Twice nominated for ECMA "Classical Recording of the year" as well as a Juno Award in 2006. His has received a collaborative multi-year 2002-2006 SSHRC/Industry Canada research grant with Acadia's Dr. Janet Marontate as principal investigator ($250,000), continuing to evaluate the impact of new technologies for the creation and dissemination of music and other forms of audio images: "New Technologies/Creative Practices in Music, Audio and Multimedia: From Theory to the Marketplace" Supported by CANARIE INC federal funding ($360,000) and Yamaha Canada/Royal Conservatory of Music Toronto development partnership, Dr. Both has been one of the key inventors of Acadia's research/commercialization "MusicPath" project (with Karen Wilder/Prof. John Hansen) (http://musicpath.acadiau.ca). MusicPath represents a system and method of delivering high quality music instrument instruction and performance over the internet in real time. The now patent-pending MusicPath software system, co-created with Acadia's Dr. James Diamond, has recently been valued by KPMG at $2.8 million dollars. Acadia has recently created a commercial joint venture with these two professors to promote further commercialization of this invention for educational markets. As a musicologist , he is now completing a special collection of over one thousand unpublished East-African indigenous songs. An innovative computer interface/search engine allows the creation of a user-directed story line, a rich tapestry of cultural relationship between each individual song and correlated photographs, film and live interviews of music now considered extinct. Dr. Both founded a brand new B.A. Concentration in Music Technology program for which he received the Acadia University President's Award for Innovation. He is presently Full Professor and Chair of Music Technology as well as Chair of Strings at the School of Music, Acadia University, Nova Scotia, Canada.
