Acadia School of Music presents University Chorus Concert - Denton Hall
Join the Acadia University Chorus for their annual Spring Concert, this year entitled "Dancing Tree", a new work from John Rutter. Dancing Tree is a captivating set of eight songs for mixed choir and harp that draws upon the poetry of Cornish writer Charles Causley. The work presents a rich selection of Causley’s texts, primarily drawn from his Collected Poems for Children and illustrative of his simple yet evocative style that conveys emotion and connection to folklore while being deeply rooted in nature. Rutter employs a diversity of musical styles and uses his choral and instrumental forces to perfectly capture the spirit of the texts, including the lilting ‘Stone in the water’, the lyrical ‘In my garden’, and the waltz-like ‘Dandelion’.
To compliment our main work, the Chorus will begin their concert by performing three works by Irish singer and composer Michael McGlynn. Best known as the founder and leader of the choral group Anúna, McGlynn's works strive to bring a modern approach to traditional irish music.
Our featured instrumentalist will be Deanne van Rooyen. A marvelous harpist and faculty at Acadia in the Earth and Environmental Science department. Also joining us will be Tyler MacDonald who will add various percussion accompaniments.
We hope you will join us for this annual event!
PLEASE NOTE: Our audiences have always known the University Chorus to perform in University Hall. However for this concert, we will be relocating to the School of Music's Denton Auditorium. We hope to see you there!

Acadia University Singers Concert - Denton Hall
The Acadia University Singers present “Fiery Spirit” – a program of empowering choral music inspired by the courage and creativity of Hildegard von Bingen.
With music by Elaine Hagenberg, Jocelyn Hagen, Sarah Quartel, Sherryl Sewepagaham, Tracy Wong, and more, this concert features stories and legends of daring and exceptional women throughout history – women who dared to defy gravity. The narrative thread woven throughout the program, connecting these stories, is the life of Hildegard von Bingen: a twelfth-century composer, nun, visionary, ecologist, and healer. A remarkable figure who championed ecological protection and social justice, fiercely defended her community, and asserted her creative and visionary voice amid oppressive times, Hildegard’s exemplary actions remain a powerful inspiration for our times.
The Acadia University Singers are a treble-voice chamber, directed by Dr. Michelle Boyd and accompanied by pianist Cian McCarron. They will be joined on the program by violinist Rebecca Czerny, saxophonist Abbie Coventry, and the AUS tenors and basses to perform a diverse selection of treble- and mixed-voice choral music, both accompanied and a cappella.
In the words of Hildegard, “in a world that’s being shipwrecked, we must remain brave and strong.” Through this program of uplifting stores and songs, the Acadia University Singers empower you to be brave and strong amid our own turbulent times. We invite you to join us in this celebration of beauty, kindness, and creativity – and let us help you empower your own fiery spirit!
