This festive event is scheduled for Sunday afternoon, December 3, at 3:00 PM in Convocation Hall, Acadia University.
The Acadia University Chorus welcomes guest soprano Deantha Edmunds. As Canada's first Inuk professional classical singer and an award-winning performer, Deantha brings a unique and empowering perspective to this Christmas celebration where she will share some familiar music in a not-so-familiar fashion. Based in St. John’s, Newfoundland & Labrador, her commitment to sharing Indigenous stories through music will add a special touch to this year’s concert.
Longlisted for the 2023 Kenojuak Ashevak Memorial Award, Deantha has made a significant impact on the cultural landscape. From solo performances for His Holiness, Pope Francis, to touring one-woman shows about the lives of the Beothuk in Newfoundland, Deantha's work resonates internationally while maintaining community integrity. Her commitment to reciprocal collaboration amongst Indigenous peoples, their music, and settlers is evident in her diverse contributions, from large choral gatherings to one-on-one music lessons.
Deantha Edmunds, with a commitment to excellence, has released three albums of music. Her most recent album, "Connections," earned her a Music NL award in 2022. Deantha's contribution to Messiah/Complex with Against the Grain Theatre and Toronto Symphony Orchestra garnered a 2022 JUNO nomination. She was also one of the recipients of the 2020 Dora Mavor Moore Award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble.
Active in creating original operatic work, contributing to Indigenous productions, and mentoring young artists, Deantha's unique voice turns heads across Canada and the world. Her presence, accompanied by the Acadia University Chorus, University String Ensemble, and University Organist John Scott, promises to be a magical and unforgettable holiday experience.
