Areas of Interest and Expertise:

  • My key areas of interest and expertise are in composition, flute performance and improvisation, music theory, and electronic music.
  • I am a professional flutist. I perform as a soloist, chamber and studio musician, and new music improviser. I have composed many works for solo flute and for flute ensembles, and I continue to actively perform in many different settings.
  • I have expertise in Western classical music theory, including part-writing, counterpoint, form and harmony. I teach the core theory courses including topics in Western classical music and song-writing (and some jazz theory). I teach advanced theory topics such as post-tonal, 20th Century techniques, and advanced harmony and analysis.
  • I have expertise in electronic music and sound, specifically using the program Max/MSP to create live interactive electroacoustic works. I run the Acadia Electroacoustic Music Studio and am well versed in ProTools and other key software, including notation software such as Sibelius.

Ensemble and Community Involvement:

  • I am a professional composer with a catalogue of over 100 original works. I have written a substantial amount for orchestras, chamber ensembles, soloists, and choirs across Canada and beyond. My music can be described as eclectic and defying categorization due to wide-ranging influences. I have expertise in instrumentation and orchestration techniques. I've won a JUNO and four ECMA awards. My compositions and performances can be found on numerous CDs.
