Acadia School of Music’s Concert & Lecture Series - Scott Leithead - Festival Theatre (1:00 pm)

On Thursday, October 9, the Acadia School of Music Concert & Lecture Series presents “Beyond the Performance: Building a Career in Music” – a talk by choral conductor Scott Leithead.

What might your life in music look like five, ten years or in the distant future? There are many paths and you may be surprised by where your journey takes you. Through stories, lessons, and a few hard-earned mistakes, we’ll explore how to find mentors, how to say yes to opportunities outside your comfort zone, and how to build meaningful musical communities. What are the possibilities and connections you can find even now while studying at Acadia that will help set you up for a future in Music?

Scott Leithead is the founder and Artistic Director of both Korora Choir Association and TIME Vocal Jazz Association in Edmonton, Alberta.

This event begins at 1:00pm in the FESTIVAL THEATRE.

Acadia School of Music’s Concert & Lecture Series - Camila Oliveira - Festival Theatre (1:00 pm)

On Thursday, November 5, the Acadia School of Music's Concert & Lecture Series presents “The Body in Performance: (re)mapping movement through Body Mapping” – a talk by Camila Oliveira.

Body Mapping is an educational approach for musicians based on the premise that freedom, efficiency, and comfort in performance begin with an understanding of the body. By exploring anatomical structures, movement, and coordination, musicians can develop awareness of physical organization and recognize unnecessary tension, compensatory patterns, and movement restrictions that may affect performance and contribute to playing-related injuries. This workshop introduces fundamental Body Mapping principles through experiential activities connecting anatomical awareness to music making.

This recital will begin at 1:00pm in the Festival Theatre.

Concert & Lecture Series events are free and all are welcome to attend – please join us and support our student performers!

Acadia University Singers - Sing You Home - Mahone Bay, NS (7:00 pm)
On Friday, November 6, the Acadia University Singers will perform “Sing You Home” – a concert of choral music for Remembrance.

With choral music by Eleanor Daley, Frank Tichelli, Kim André Arneson, Peter-Anthony Togni, and more, “Sing You Home” will take listeners on a musical journey from war to the return home – and from desolation to hope.  Woven together with poetry and letters written by Acadia University veterans, this program provides a contemplative space to reflect on the weight of war and to remember those who have given their lives in service of the pursuit of peace. “There is music in the midst of desolation,” wrote WWI poet Laurence Binyon in his famous poem, “For the Fallen” – a poignant reminder of the important role of music in Remembrance, and the power of music to uplift the human soul in the midst of our darkest hours.

Special guests on the program will be CONDUIT Chamber Choir: a community-based upper-voice chamber choir, directed by Andrew Cranston, comprised of singers from across the Annapolis Valley. The Acadia University Singers and CONDUIT are excited to be performing together in celebration of the Nova Scotia Choral Federation’s 50th anniversary.

The performance will be at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Mahone Bay (89 Edgewater Street).  A portion of the proceeds from that concert will go to support the St. John’s Piano Fundraiser.

The concert will begin at 7:00pm; admission is by free-will donation at the door.

Acadia School of Music’s Concert & Lecture Series - Dr. Kait Pinder - Festival Theatre (1:00 pm)

On Thursday, November 12, the Acadia School of Music’s Concert & Lecture Series presents “The Political Leonard Cohen” – a talk by Dr. Kait Pinder.

A Saturday Night Live performance, a viral poem about Kanye West, "Hallelujah" at a political rally––since his death in 2016, Leonard Cohen has made several appearances as a commentator, a judge, or even a collaborator in American politics. What is Canada's "secular saint" doing here? This talk examines how these appearances relate to the latent thread of political critique in his career and reflects on how are remembered and reimagined by different audiences after their deaths.

Dr. Pinder is an Associate Professor of English and Head of the Department of English and Theatre at Acadia University.

This event begins at 1:00pm in the Festival Theatre, 509 Main St., Wolfville.
